Week commencing 18th September 2023 - Acorns 59

Welcome to our weekly blog post.

We have had such a wonderful week at The Acorns.

Our focus this week was on feelings - within our continuous provision we ensured there were opportunities to explore emotions.

We had books, puzzles and games that linked in with the topic allowing the children to participate in conversations around feelings and how we manage them.

We have been singing our feelings song – I wonder if the children will sing it for you.

“Sometimes we feel happy

Sometimes we feel sad

Sometimes we feel excited

Sometimes we feel mad

There are many feeling that we feel everyday

There are many feelings and they’re all OK”

We have enjoyed reading the Colour Monster book which has helped us to label our emotions.

We even made our own colour monsters !

We have enjoyed lots of time outside and have noticed a big difference in the weather.

Last week we were wearing sun hats and cream, this week its wellies and wet weather suits.

The weather hasn’t stopped us from enjoying time outside.

We have splashed in puddles, collected rain water in containers and pots to make soup in the mud kitchen as well as having fun on the pirate ship and other garden toys.

We noticed lots of spider webs on the rosemary plant and this went on to inspire a bug hunt. We found spiders, snails, slugs and woodlouse.

We had a very special visit this week.

The children were over the moon to see the fire engine and to chat to the firefighters.

They allowed the children to climb into the back of the fire engine to look at some of their equipment and clothes. We saw big boots, coats and masks.

Do you know that West Sussex Fire Service can visit your home to give you a fire safety check?

It is a free service and they will give you tips and advice on how to be fire smart and ways of keeping you and your family safe.

If you are lucky … they might turn up in a Fire Engine !

Thank you to the team at WEST SUSSEX FIRE SERVICE for helping to keep us safe.

We check our fire alarms often at The Acorns and do fire drills every half term with the children.

Have you checked your smoke alarms recently ?

On Thursday we had a yummy lentil cottage pie for lunch and had some mashed potato left over – Mrs Neve decided to put it to good use and whipped up a batch of potato cakes with the children.

They worked in small groups to add flour to the potato, to roll it out and to use cutters to make rounds.

Mrs Neve then gently pan fried the potato cakes in a little oil.

The children enjoyed them for snack, some choosing to dunk them into some ketchup !!

“These are DELICIOUS”

“I like these.”

“Can I have some more please.”

We have enjoyed music sessions and the children are having a great time using their harmonicas and the other instruments. We particularly love the drums !!

Mrs Franks had a big surprise when someone special came to say hello.

This little one has enjoyed her fist few days at big school but wanted to pop in to show us how grown up she is in her uniform.

We were over the moon to see her !!

Here are a selection of other photos from our week.

We hope you enjoy them.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

See you next week for more fun and games.

Mrs Franks and the Acorns 59 team.
