Hello everyone and welcome to our blog post.

We hope you enjoy reading about our week at The Acorns.

This week our focus has been – Our Feelings.

Each day we have read The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas.

The books is colourful and engaging and the children have been learning about different emotions and how they all are important.

We followed the colour monster on his journey to sort his emotions into jars.

Each colour represented a different feeling.

Yellow – Happiness

Blue – Sadness

Red – Anger

Green – Calm

Black – Fear

Pink – Loved

The book provided a lovely opportunity for the children to begin recognising and naming their emotions - talking about how they feel and observing how others might be feeling.

We learnt a new song – perhaps the children will sing it for you.

It starts with … “Sometimes we feel happy”

We know that helping the children to understand their emotions is an essential part of their personal, social and emotional development.  By giving the children the time to explore their emotions and helping them to recognise them in others we are supporting them to develop self regulation, empathy and to build positive relationships.

We enjoyed collaging our own feeling jars – recalling the colours from the story and which emotion they represented.

We used sticky glue and tissue paper.

We painted colour monsters using our fingers – we love finger painting.

If children were not keen on using their fingers we had cotton buds on hand to use instead.

Some children kept the colour separate and others experimented with mixing the colours.

We also painted a giant colour monster – it was such a fun group activity and the children chatted about the colours they were using and which emotion they thought the monster was feeling.

“I’m doing red cause he is cross.”

“I am painting green because he is relaxing and calm.”

We played lots of group games during our circle times which supported our theme.

The children chose emotion cards each day to share how they were feeling.

We enjoyed a walk into the village and went to see the ducks on the pond. We noticed that being outside made us feel happy.

There is always lots to see on our walks and this week we bumped into two Acorns Dads.

We chatted to a couple walking up the lane.

We looked carefully at things growing in the allotments.

We counted the ducks on the pond.

Have you noticed the pepper that has been growing by the front door at The Acorns?

We have been watching it for weeks and are so excited to see it has changed colour.

On Friday we did some baking.

We made yummy heat shaped biscuits.

The children used the scales to measure the ingredients and then a big spoon to mix them together.

We used heart shaped cutters.

Well done little chefs !

"The cutters are pink and purple."

"Can we eat them?"

"The sugar is underneath the butter."

We hope you have enjoyed reading about our week and we look forward to your comments.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Mrs Franks and The Acorns Team.
